Shirley Allum Hudlicky:
"Allie was only three months old when her mother died. Great Aunt Minnie (Hungerford) said that her father allowed one of his brother's families to raise her. Minnie thought it was Uncle Tom [Thomas Allum, 1818-1897]. It must have been one of the brothers in Pennsylvania, for this is where Allie is mentioned in the wills of James and Rebecca Allum, where she married and where she is buried.
"Thomas [Allum] and Isaac [Allum] were in Jasper County, Iowa at the same time, but it is unlikely that Allie was taken into the home of Thomas, for he had lost his wife April 5, 1863, just 12 days before Lucinda, Isaac's wife died.
"Isaac returned to Greene County, Pennsylvania where he married Sarah Ann Swart on December 29, 1863. It is very probable that the young infant 'Allie' went with him, and one of his brothers there raised her. This was probably James. [In fact, it was later established that Allie was reared by James and Rebecca Allum].
Allie is buried in Greene County, Pennsylvania (Enon Cemetery). She married William H. Carroll, and they had one daughter, Nellie, who is mentioned in the wills of James and Rebecca Allum and in the will of Isaac Allum. Nellie married Robert Rhinesburg [aka Rhineberg -- DeeAnna] and they lived in Ohio.
"The Allum family Bible in Iowa gives Allie's death date as October 19, 1887. Her gravestone is inscribed September 23, 1887. The October date could be when her relatives in Iowa received the news."
Shirley, September 1, 1964 letter to DeeAnna:
"When I asked Aunt Minnie Hungerford if she knew the name of the man Allie married, she said it was a man by the name of Carl. I, of course, supposed this to be a first name. It was a surname, and it is Carroll. Census records provide the name 'Carl' in several instances. Because it is pronounced 'Carl' by family members, it is easy to see how it is spelled that way."
