- Buried: Koszta Cemetery, Iowa County, Iowa
General Notes:
Photo: Re-photographed in 1999--more than 30 years after my 1965 snapshot--the gravestone of Mary Ann (Teagarden) Fields, 1813-1878, remains intact and readable at Koszta Cemetery, Koszta, Iowa County, Iowa. The updated picture was graciously taken by my distant Allum cousin, Linda Kelley Schlater.
Twin sons (who died at birth) of Alexander Teagarden Fields and his wife, Sarah "Emma" L. (Meacham) Fields, are "buried near Grandpa and Grandma Fields" at Koszta, Iowa, according to Alex and Emma's daughter, Bonnie Darr Fields, 1882-1967. "Grandpa" was Lewis Fields, and "Grandma" was Mary Ann (Teagarden) Fields. (Last to die, Lewis is buried at Koszta without a stone.)
DeeAnna's Comments:
Cemetery records do document a "very old stone" for infant children of "A. T. Fields."
The 1880 mortality schedule for Honey Creek Township, Koszta, Iowa County, Iowa documents the death of twin boys named Warren and Orren Fields in August, 1879 at the ages of 6 months. Might these entries refer to the twin sons of Alexander and Emma? The twins' father is shown as having been born in Pennsylvania, as was Alexander Fields.
Bonnie's statement is that the twin boys "died when they were born." However, at this time I do not know who in the Fields family other than Alexander and Emma might have had twin boys in that time period.
If the Mortality Schedule entries are accurate, the boys were named "Warren" and "Orren" and died in August, 1879.
Cause of death for both infant boys: "Membranous Croup".
