"When researching in Marengo, I walked to the Simmons Shoe Store hoping to meet Robert Simmons but also met 84-year-old Mark Simmons. Mark talked about 'Banks,' Jennie, Rex, and his family and answered all questions.
Shirley Allum Hudlicky, September 3, 1964 letter to DeeAnna:
"I enjoyed your account of the genealogical excursions in Marengo, and now you know the thrill of meeting and visiting with the new-found members of the family. I have long ago come to the conclusion that it is worthwhile, if for no other reason than this--bringing the family closer together and, of course, meeting new relatives."
OBITUARY (Jennie):
Funeral services for Mrs. Mark A. Simmons, wife of a Marengo business man, were held at the Methodist church here Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Harland T. Gant officiating.
Burial was in I.O.O.F. cemetery.
Mrs. Simmons died at her Marengo home Sunday morning. Funeral services were held on what would have been her 73rd birthday.
Jennie R. Simmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Allum, was born Nov. 29, 1882, at Marengo. On April 7, 1901, she was married to Mark A. Simmons. To this union were born a daughter and four sons.
She is survived by her husband, two sons, Robert and Cedric, all of Marengo, and a daughter, Mrs. Ira Steffeson (sic), Silvis, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, two brothers and two sons.
Two half-sisters, Mrs. John Schloeman, Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Carl Pelzer, Toledo, and a half-brother, Wren Allum, Chicago, along with five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, also survive.
Casket bearers at the service were Lyle Dye, Vaughn Schulz, Wallace Radeke, Alva Burrell, Lloyd Milling and Charles Lindsay.
