(In 1789 in New York City, George Washington was unanimously selected by members of the Electoral College to become the country's first President; the first inaugural ball was held. John Adams was Vice President. Jefferson chose a Cabinet that included Thomas Jefferson, Henry Knox, Alexander Hamilton and Edmund Randolph. Knox became the country's first Secretary of War, Hamilton head of the Treasury, and Randolph, Attorney General. Jefferson was head of the Department of Foreign Affairs. Congress voted to create the United States Army to be made up of 1,000 enlisted men and officers with terms of service, pay schedules and uniforms. The Federal Judiciary Act was passed creating 3 circuit courts, 13 district courts and a Supreme Court. The First Tariff Act was passed setting taxes on certain imports and giving tax breaks on others. Already, twelve amendments to the Constitution were created awaiting ratification by the states. Potomac River land was ceded, including Alexandria, for a national capital.)

(In 1876, Ulysses S. Grant served the last year of his two terms as President of the United States. Colorado became the nation's 38th state. In the Dakota Territory, George Armstrong Custer led 265 troopers into battle with the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians on the banks of the Little Big Horn River; we know the outcome. Also in Dakota Territory, "Wild Bill" Hickock was gunned down at a saloon in Deadwood, shot in the back by Jack McCall who sought to assure his reputation as a gun fighter. The James and Younger gangs rode into Minnesota to rob the Northfield Bank. In Massachusetts, at Boston, Alexander Graham Bell achieved the first electronic human voice transmission with the aid of his assistant, Thomas Watson. Mark Twain's TOM SAWYER was published. In an 1868 inventory after Charles W. Allum's death, Thomas Strope was among those who owed money to Charles; the two men were brothers-in-law.
