John McCullough
John McCullough, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Shape) McCullough was born October 21, 1832 and died (the next several lines of this obituary, obtained from microfilm, are unreadable).
He was an intelligent man and served his township for years as a school director. His was a hospitable home and many a tired weary traveler was fed and lodged beneath his roof. He belonged to the old school of citizens of whom Greene county boasted in the past, upright, truthful, honest, industrious, peaceable, law abiding and hospitable. They were grand old men. Mr. McCullough had been afflicted for some time with a cancer on his face, also with a (sic) kidney trouble, the immediate cause of his death being uremic poisoning. He was married three times. In 1851, he was married to Miss Caroline Jennings, who died in 1852, leaving one son, Silas, of Nineveh, Pa. In 1855 he was married to Mrs. Eva Fonner Hedge, who died April 21, 1888. To this union was born the following children: Samuel C. (deceased); Mrs. Martha J. Clutter, West Union; Mrs. Nancy A. Hampson and Mrs. Flora B. Auld, of Deer Lick; James L. of Waynesburg, and William A., of Deer Lick. On December 19, 1889, he was married to Mrs. Lena Clutter Conger, who died January 19, 1910. He leaves the following stepchildren: Mrs. Elizabeth Pettit, Sycamore; Mrs. Abigal (sic) Miler (deceased); Mr. Lucinda Swart, Dunns Station; Mrs. Olive Loughman, Washington, Pa.; Hiram O. Conger, Warren, Ohio, and Mrs. Mabel McCullough, of Deer Lick. He also leaves the following sisters, Mrs. Mary Cowan, Waynesburg; Mrs. Hannah Mankey, Nineveh, and Mrs. Catherine Sanders, of Amity. Also 86 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren survive. In politics he was a Democrat always standing loyally to party lines in National and State elctions, but in local affairs, the man came first. He united with the West Union Presbyterian church more than sixty years ago and has always been a faithful member and loyal supporter. Funeral services were held in the West Union Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. J. Knepshield. Interment in the West Union cemetery.
The love which guided our father On his upward way Will comfort you and me and all, Whenever we faint or falter, stumble, fall.
Bud McCullough, December 17, 2001 e-mail to DeeAnna:
Eva married my great grandfather, John McCullough, from Greene County, Pennsylvania. Her ancestry goes back prior to the Revolutionary War.
Just today I found a short lineage that my father had left in his Bible. He also was a John McCullough, 1894-1980. This list reveals that my great grandfather had been married before Eva. Eva was previously married to a Hedge and had 3 daughters--Lucinda, Elizabeth, and Abigail.
Your posting was my first hit with this information. I guess this means we're at least 1/2 Cuzzins.
John and Eva raised her Hedge daughters as their own. Lucinda married Amos Swart, Elizabeth married Joseph Pettit, and Abigail married a Miller. In addition, there were children Samuel, Nancy, Martha, Florence, William A., and James Lee, who was my grandfather.
If someone wants to join the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), the link thru Eva to Frederick Loughman could be an admission.
