OBITUARY
(Cleone) from the AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, September 15, 1994:

Cleone I. Pelzer, 84, of Ames died Thursday of respiratory arrest at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Tama. Burial will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. in the Calvary Cemetery in Marengo.

Cleone Allum was born in Marengo to John and Gertrude (Amrine) Allum. She married Carl A. Pelzer in Norway on June 15, 1938. A 1927 graduate of Marengo High School, she worked as a postal clerk in Norway and was later employed for 23 years at Carter's Jewelry Store in Toledo. In 1982, she and her husband moved to Ames. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the St. Theresa Circle, and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. In August, she was honored for being the only true daughter of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War in Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Henderson-Overton Funeral Home in Toledo.

Services For Carl Pelzer Were Held in Toledo

Funeral mass for Carl Pelzer, 77, Ames, a former Marengo resident, was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, from St. Patrick's Catholic church, Tama, with burial following in Calvary cemetery, Marengo.

In failing health five years, he died Friday night, Dec. 19, 1986, at Mary Greeley hospital, Ames. He had been hospitalized since July.

Scripture service was held at Henderson Funeral home, Toledo, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22.

Born January 21, 1909 at Marengo, Carl A. Pelzer was the son of John and Margaret Sullivan Pelzer. Raised in Marengo, he received his education in Marengo schools, graduating with the class of 1927. He continued his education at St. Ambrose College, Davenport, graduating in 1932.


Hall of Fame

He was among 12 former St. Ambrose College athletes inducted into the St. Ambrose Hall of Fame during homecoming activities Oct. 12. Since he was hospitalized in July after falling and breaking a hip at his home, his son accepted the honor for him. Pelzer played four years of football with St. Ambrose beginning with the 1927 season. He also ran on the track team in 1928 and 1929. In the news release on his nomination to the Hall of Fame, Pelzer, as a senior in 1931, was credited along with the quarterback in leading the team to a 9 - 1 mark, a school record at that time for the most victories in a single season. It was a record that stood until 1950. The 1931 team also scored the first win in seven years over what was then Columbia and is now Loras College, and Pelzer was awarded the game ball.

Pelzer was the bookkeeper at Iowa Valley Creamery, Marengo, and then managed bowling alleys in Marengo, Sigourney and Iowa City before purchasing a pool and billiard hall in Toledo in 1937. He operated it until retiring in 1974.

During World War II h ws yard foreman for Joslin Wood Preserving plant, Tama.

His marriage to the former Cleone Allum took place at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Norway, June 15, 1938. They moved to Ames in December, 1982.

He was a member of St. Cecelia's Catholic Church, Ames, and had been a member of Holy Name Order at Tama. His hobbies included hunting and fishing and he enjoyed watching football.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Eugene.
