1. Marriage Record Mary Martha Belle ALLUM
General Notes:
Marriage: Large ledger-type books in which records (birth, marriage, death) span two pages--left and right--is typical of documentation in courthouses. Such is the case regarding the 1886 record of marriage at the Jasper County, Iowa court house for Mary Belle Allum and Leander "Lee" Guessford. To present data in a practical manner in this online file, however, pertinent excerpts from the left page and the right page have been combined.
Excerpts reveal the county marriage record number for Mary Belle and Lee is 1297, and the date of their license was September 8. The affidavit for marriage was made by "James N. Allum" (James Newton Allum), elder brother of the bride. "Lee A. Guessford," "farmer," who lived in Jasper County, Iowa, was the groom. He was 24 years of age, race or color "W" for white, and he had been born in Iowa. Lee's parents were "W. D. Guessford" and "L. A. Everett". This was to be a 1st marriage for Lee.
All of the foregoing data is on the left page.
On the right page, "Mary B. Allum" is the bride, whose residence was also Jasper County, Iowa. She was 18 years old and race or color "W" (white). Her parents were "J. S. Allum" and "E. Loar," and this was a 1st marriage for Mary. Lee and Mary were married at "J. S. Allums" (residence) on September 9, 1886, with witnesses "J. Davis" and "Matt Guessford," and "Rev. H. P. Dyer" officiated.
