Shirley Allum Hudlicky, October 14, 1965 letter to DeeAnna:
"I spent from 10:30 a.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. copying, with my camera, the material that was readily Allum from six scrap books in the possession of Harley Swart. These scrapbooks are clippings and pictures mounted by Sarah Jane (Allum) Swart. Now that I have returned home and am able to evaluate what I did get, it is obvious that more of the material could have been copied. It was a literal gold mine of information.
"Harley and his wife couldn't have been nicer. His wife, I am sure, was in the last stages of terminal cancer; she spent most of her time lying down. That is a reason I did not go back for more, and I had used all my film. Harley was injured in World War I and was also suffering, although he was mostly recovered from a recurrent siege of pain from old wounds. Harley lives on the old Swart homestead about two miles west of the old Allum place, up a winding trail-road to the large square brick house. The land was sold to Mr. Sawyer, who purchased Char-Mar farms, it being part of the ranch, but the owner would rather have people live in the houses than have them empty. I had no idea when I read Kith and Kin (loaned to me by Belle Allum) that I would ever meet the Harley Swart mentioned in it. They are in the book because Mrs. Swart is related to the Pattersons.
"Many times since my return I have wished you and I lived closer so we could get together with my findings. There is so much of it.
"Last Saturday night we got our slides of Greene County, and it was marvelous to re-live that wonderful vacation."
Belle Allum mentioned above was Mrs. Clayton Allum. Clayton Allum (1884-1963) was a son of Isaac Leonard Allum (1850-1917). Clayton's wife was Henrietta "Belle" Patterson (1886-1963). --DeeAnna
