Civil War Pension 1 Porter ALLUM
General Notes:
Civil War Pension: Acquired in September, 1964 from The National Archives, the more genealogically important papers from Porter Allum's pension file include this one and the four that follow. This page, dated August 28, 1871, is signed by S. C. McCracken, M.D., and attests to the fact that he attended to Porter "soon after he returned from the Army," as follows:
"This is to certify that I was called to attend to Porter Alum soon after his return from the Army, found him at first suffering with hemorrhage from the lungs, supposed the case to be acute pulmonary consumption, at least disorganized lung tissue, resulting as I supposed, from cold, exposure and measles which he contracted while serving as a Private soldier in the Army. Copious expectoration, frequent attacks of hemorrhage, and gradual wasting of the body marked the history of his illness until his death, and on the day of [no date was inserted] A. D. 18 [no year was inserted] he, said Porter Allum, died from the effects of said disease and from no other cause known to affiant. And he swears that he has no interest, direct or indirect, in the Pension Claim of Louisa J. Allum."
