Photo: Daughter and fourth child of five of Charles McLaughlin and Elizabeth McDonald, Mary Ann was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1850. Her parents and three elder siblings had arrived in America from Ireland in 1846. Prior to her birth, Mary Ann's elder sister -- also named Mary Ann, born in Ireland -- had died in Northumberland County. In the 1850s she migrated with her parents and siblings from Pennsylvania to Des Moines County, Iowa where she spent the remainder of her brief life, passing on at less than 29 years of age. First of her family to die in Des Moines County, Mary Ann's father Charles and her mother Elizabeth were later buried next to her, father on one side, mother on the other. Her monument at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Dodgeville, is the tallest of her immediate and extended family subsequently buried there.
