Leota Clutter:
"The Fields property down the creek below the Ackley bridge toward Majorsville in Greene County, Pennsylvania, probably was the homestead of John Fields and Matilda (Sprowls) Fields. When I was a child I heard my dad talk about it. We were there in the thirties and no one lived there; the house and buildings had fallen. I remember a large house. I don't know who owns the land now; the road is closed, and a dam was built below to help keep Wheeling, West Virginia from being flooded. Enlow Valley was famous for 'wild flowers'--more varieties than anywhere in this area. There have been tours every year for the last five years.
"My great grandfather, Henry Sprowls, owned the Joshua Ackley farm near Ackley Bridge. My grandfather was James Sprowls, a brother to Matilda and Nancy Jane. There were 9 children in my great grandfather's family. I was fortunate to locate a picture of Nancy Jane and her husband, William Birch, a Civil War vet."
