Photo: When Margaret (Eckles) Leighner married Alexander Teagarden Fields in 1893, she became stepmother to five daughters ages 24 to 11. This original photo, gift to DeeAnna Allum Granston in 1965 from Bonnie Darr Fields, was taken at Ideal Studio, 312 6th Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa. Bonnie, 1882-1967, was Margaret's stepdaughter.

1900 CENSUS, New Mexico, Lincoln, White Oaks ("John H. Leighner," age 63, born July 1836 in Virginia, is a carpenter, married for 7 years to Laura, born in Maryland. In 1890, John H. Leighner had filed for a Civil War pension in Colorado. On May 9, 1910 his widow, Laura, filed for a widow's pension in New Mexico)




The 1870 census reveals Abraham P. Eckles, age 2, born in Iowa, with his parents, A. P. and Eliza Eckles in Montgomery County, Iowa. He was a much younger brother of Margaret (Eckles) (Leighner) Fields.

The same Abraham "born in Warren County, Iowa" is in Colfax, Jasper County, Iowa in 1895. His elder sister Margaret had married Alexander Teagarden Fields in 1893 and they, too, are in Colfax, Jasper County, Iowa at the time of the 1895 census. In 1870, Margaret and her new husband, John H. Leighner, also lived in Warren County.

The same Abraham P. Eckles is on the west coast, in Sunnyside, Yakima County, Washington in 1920, where Margaret herself is documented in the 1910 census. He died there on July 30, 1942.

Margaret married Alexander Teagarden FIELDS, son of Lewis FIELDS and Mary Ann TEAGARDEN, on April 15, 1893 in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. (Alexander Teagarden FIELDS was born on March 1, 1841 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, died on January 4, 1904 in Mitchellville, Polk County, Iowa and was buried on January 7, 1904 in Colfax City Cemetery, Jasper County, Iowa.)

Margaret next married John H. LEIGHNER on December 31, 1868 in Warren County, Iowa. (John H. LEIGHNER was born in July 1836 in Virginia and died about 1910 in New Mexico.)
