Bio: Samuel P. Bates' HISTORY OF GREENE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA reveals that J. P. Allum was present at the surrender of General Lee to General Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. In addition, he had served with General George Armstrong Custer. After the war Allum operated hotels at different times at Graysville and Waynesburg, both in Greene County. His wife Rebecca's obituary states the couple operated the Allum House in Waynesburg over a period of 40 years.
