bullet  General Notes:

Photo: Here is the ornate gravestone of Mary Ann (Teagarden) Fields, 1813-1878, at Koszta Cemetery, Koszta, Iowa County, Iowa. Buried near Mary Ann are the infant twin boys of her son and daughter-in-law, Alexander Teagarden Fields and Sarah "Emma" L. (Meacham) Fields. The stone reads,

"Mary A.
Wife of L. Fields
Died
Sept. 23, 1878
A. 65 Y. 6 M. 29d"

In the background is the stone for Arthur "Ora" Fields, 1873-1914, grandson of Mary Ann and her husband, Lewis Fields. "Ora" was the child of Francis Marion "Frank" Fields and his wife, Sarah (Gorby) Fields.

Bonnie Darr Fields (1882-1967), February 14, 1965 letter to DeeAnna:

"Mama and Papa had twin boys that died when they were born, and they are buried in Koszta, Iowa by Grandpa and Grandma Fields."

DeeAnna's Comments:

Cemetery records do document a "very old stone" for infant children of "A. T. Fields."

The 1880 mortality schedule for Honey Creek Township, Koszta, Iowa County, Iowa documents the death of twin boys named Warren and Orren Fields in August, 1879 at the ages of 6 months. Might these entries refer to the twin sons of Alexander and Emma? The twins' father is shown as having been born in Pennsylvania, as was Alexander Fields.

Bonnie's statement is that the twin boys "died when they were born." However, at this time I do not know who in the Fields family other than Alexander and Emma might have had twin boys in that time period.

If the Mortality Schedule entries are accurate, the boys were named "Warren" and "Orren" and died in August, 1879.

Cause of death for both infant boys: "Membranous Croup".
