General Notes:
Photo: Because Alvin Lorando Allum, 1885-1974, was a promoter of local sports, the official scorekeeper for high school baseball games, and attended nearly all high football and basketball games, his beloved nickname "Pop" marks the entrance to the park dedicated in his honor in Gravette, Benton County, Arkansas. The park is the new location of all baseball, soccer, football and track fields for all schools in Gravette.
Standing beside the engraved sign are brothers Alvin Leland "Lee" Allum, left, and Kenneth Manson Allum, Jr., right (grandsons of Alvin Lorando Allum).
From Kenneth M. Allum, Jr.
Kenneth M. Allum, Jr.
"Alvin worked for the railroad from Iowa into Colorado and back to Hutchinson, Kansas where he married Anna Marie Walker in 1905. In our family line he was the transition from farmer to merchant. Alvin and Marie had four children, and the entire family moved to Gravette, Arkansas in 1922--presumably to manage the farm Alvin's father Nelson had bought or inherited near there--but they soon moved into town where ' A. L. ' continued his building trades and established a building supply and appliance store."

Kenneth M. Allum, Jr., January 29, 2008 e-mail to DeeAnna:
"After restudying the 1905 census, I wonder if Alvin's occupation is "coach cleaner" as in passenger cars on the railroad? Nelson is ' car inspector,' likely a supervisor in the same line of work. Alvin once said he had worked for the railroad (among multitudinous occupations).
"From the birth locations of the children, it would appear they shuttled back and forth from Colorado to Kansas in the decade prior to the 1905 census. Roy was born in Kansas, Warren in Colorado, and in 1905 they are back in Kansas."
