POSTCARD To Miss Matilda Meacham Solon, Johnson Co., Iowa
Koszta, Iowa April 27, 1879
Dear Sister,
What can be the matter. You have not written for two weeks. If Anna had not written a postal I should have been anxious about our little Hattie. We all want to see her so bad. If it were not for the Scarlet Fever rising so bad I should go after her. Little Jessie Fields died one week today. It was very sad and sudden. The other children are recovering. No other cases yet. Hope it may not spread any farther. Alex has been sick again this week, not so bad but can just get around. Nellie coughs and whoops very hard. Gracie frets all the time for Hattie, says she will go after her if I don't. Bertha Darr has been very sick, is some better. Dr. Darr is miserable again. It is sick, sick everywhere. I long to be where children and grown folks are well. Write soon to your sister Emma. Kisses for my little girl, lots of them.
Original vintage postcard, owned by DeeAnna, is unsigned but was written by Emma (Meacham) Fields to her sister Matilda who lived their father Anderson Meacham's household in Solon, Iowa. Alex is Emma's husband (Alexander Teagarden Fields). Gracie, Nellie and Hattie are children of Emma and Alex. The date of "April 20, 1879" as Jessie's date of death is calculated from the information in this postcard.
