bullet  General Notes:

Photo: In 1965, Shirley Allum Hudlicky's Christmas card was a photo of the serene Enon Baptist Church in West Finley, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Jemima's son, James Allum (1822-1905), was a deacon of Enon Church, and his descendants were keepers of the record books.

Shirley's 1965 Christmas newsletter states, "After installing the cooler and ice chest and packing the tape recorder, slides, projector, cameras, copying equipment and a few clothes I began my trip on June 17. Five weeks and five days later I had traveled nearly 8,000 miles, visited with all the immediate family and many of the aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Family data collected included records from courthouses--wills, deeds, contracts, inventories, vital statistics--biographies from county histories, items from genealogies, church records, maps, over 200 photocopies of obituaries, weddings, news items, Bible records and old photographs from collections in the Harley Swart home in Pennsylvania and the Merlyn Guessford home in Iowa. The Pennsylvania countryside--Washington and Greene counties south of Pittsburgh--is entirely rolling hills. When seen from one of the ridge roads, the view is spectacular."

Charles Monroe Swart (1893-1988), August 18, 1976 letter to Shirley Allum Hudlicky:

"We are making quite an addition to the Enon Baptist Church. For want of a better name, I'll call it a social room. Herschel A. Sprowls, who is somewhat of a carpenter, and Harry Newland, who is a capable mechanic, are taking the lead in construction and donating their services along with other members of the church. Herschel expects to spend most of the summer at it. I think it will fill a need that has existed for some years. In that part of the country, the church is still the social center."

The Allum surname is found throughout records of Enon Baptist Church, plus surnames of related families. A hardcover source book is HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF THE ENON BAPTIST CHURCH, 1848-1990, by the Historical Committee, 165 pages plus index. Pages 6-10 offer the history of Enon Church by Louis Allum Sprowls (1927-2005). He states,

"Their first house of worship was a typical rural church of frame construction which presented an attractive appearance in the little village of Jonesville. Jonesville was situated at the intersection of what was then called Waynesburg Road and Water Street. It later came to be known as Enon. The church edifice was located on the Greene County side of the stream and on the west side of Waynesburg Road. It served its function as the church house until a new edifice was built in 1881 about 300 yards north and on the other side of the stream [in Washington County, Pennsylvania]. The original structure was then placed in the hands of the building committee to properly dispose of and apply the money to the new church. The church records indicate a vote of thanks to an influential member for 'preventing the old church building from falling into the hands of another denomination,' the other denomination not being named. The old building was later used for commercial and residential purposes until it was destroyed by fire shortly after the turn of the century."

Louis Allum Sprowls was a direct descendant of Charles W. and Jemima (Barnhart) Allum, as follows: James "Jimmy" and Rebecca (Sermon) Allum; Peninah Arabelle (Allum) Ealy and Silas W. Ealy; Rebecca Jane (Ealy) Sprowls and Thomas Benton Sprowls; Herschel Allum Sprowls and Stella (McCombs) Sprowls

Shirley Allum Hudlicky:

"The Orphans Court handles guardianships, adoptions, proof of contracts, appraisal lists, inventories, sales lists, account books, auditors' accounts, and things like that. By far this is where I got the most interesting information. I have listed all of the items pertaining to Charles Allum."

I am using this location in this online file to share with you some of the inventory lists pertaining to Charles W. Allum's property; Charles died in 1868. There are mathematical discrepancies: The lists do not always equal amounts totaled by the individuals who originally created them. --DeeAnna
