FROM PUBLICATION:
HISTORICAL TIMES ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE CIVIL WAR, Patricia Faust, Editor, Copyright 1986, page 7, as follows:
Allatoona, Ga., eng. at 5 Oct. 1864--In late Sept. 1864, a month after the fall of Atlanta, Confederate Gen. JOHN B. HOOD crossed the Chattahoochee River and marched north to threaten the Western &Atlantic, the railroad that supplied Maj. Gen. WILLIAM T. SHERMAN's Federal forces in the captured city. Hood hoped to lure Sherman north, to fight on ground more favorable to the Confederates.
2-6 Oct.--Hood's army struck at the railroad between the Chattahoochee and Etowah rivers, capturing small garrisons and damaging the track. Allatoona Pass, where the railroad pierced the hills south of the Etowah and served a Federal supply base, quickly became the focus. Sherman, by signal flag, ordered Brig. Gen. JOHN M. CORSE from Rome, Ga., to reinforce the 900 men who garrisoned the post; Corse reached Allatoona with about 1,100 men early 5 Oct.
That morning Maj. Gen. SAMUEL G. FRENCH, whose division had been sent by Hood to capture Allatoona, examined the position and decided to attack from the west and north. After Corse refused a demand to surrender, the Confederates assaulted. In several hours of vicious fighting, the Southerners often came close to breaking through the Federal positions, but always the Northerners rallied and held. By early afternoon French concluded that he could not take the position and drew off to rejoin Hood. Federal casualties in the battle were reported at 706; French reported a loss of about 800.
The battle gave rise to several legends, the most famous of which concerned a Federal message sent over the Confederates by signal flag, from Sherman to Corse. This message was quoted by journalists as "Hold the fort; I am coming," and in that form became the basis for the 19th-century revival hymn "Hold the Fort."
