Obituary: Shared by Margaret Smith Brennan, the obituary for Madolyn Louise Allum documents her death in Washington County, Pennsylvania. In a 2001 e-mail, Linda Cunningham Fluharty--who personally knew Madolyn--praised her as "brilliant and highly regarded." "She had been a nurse in World War II," wrote Linda. "She and other military nurses started the B. M. Spurr School of Practical Nursing. Miss Allum and her associates were disciplined and hard working. They were among women holding high positions and proving their competence as administrators, etc. long before the Women's Liberation Movement."

Retired hospital worker
Madolyn L. Allum, 80, of East Beau Street, Washington, formerly of Allison Avenue, died Sunday, December 12, 1993, in Washington Hospital.
Born May 11, 1913, in West Alexander, she was a daughter of John Austin and Osa Kennedy Allum.
Miss Allum was a graduate of Washington High School and Reynolds Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Glen Dale, W. Va. She did postgraduate work in neurosurgery at West Penn Hospital, Bloomfield.
She served in the U. S. Army Nurses Corps during World War II at Ashford General Hospital, White Sulfur Springs, W. Va., and was a retired hospital administrator from Reynolds Memorial Hospital.
Miss Allum was a member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church, the American Legion and the Washington County Chapter of the Daughters do the American Revolution.
Surviving are one sister, Josephine A. Pfaadt of Washington; one nephew, Lawrence R. Pfaadt of Alta Loma, Calif., and two great-nieces.

ALLUM--Friends of Madolyn L. Allum of East Beau Street, Washington, formerly of Allison Avenue, who died Sunday, December 12, 1993, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Platt and Barnhill Funeral Home, 420 Locust Avenue, Washington, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 16, with the Rev. John C. Haniford officiating. Interment in West Alexander Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations to the Madolyn L. Allum Memorial Fund, Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, W. Va. 26038.
