Photo: This now-vintage photo of Ada McFarlan, 1858-1917, was taken at James studio in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. Ada's wife Sadie outlived him by almost forty years but did not remarry.

Betty Flournoy, e-mail to DeeAnna: Ada was killed while at work. Sadie got a small sum from insurance and, with that money, bought and sold houses to maintain herself for the rest of her life. She lived in an apartment in one of the houses she owned at the time of her death. Very independent.
