The village of origin of the Jost Bernhardt family was 6112 Gross-Zimmern (12 km. e. of Darmstadt; Chbks. begin 1640). The earliest known ancestor of the N. Y. group was Philip Jacob Bernhardt; his wife Anna Sara, d. 29 Dec. 1692. The ch. of Philip Jacob Nerhardt and wife Anna Sara (Leber? - HJ) were:

Caspar, md. as s/o Philip Bernhardt 28 Dec. 1695 to Anna d/o Peter Horning

Carl, md. as s/o Philip Bernard 9 Dec. 1697 to Anna Margaretha, d/o Martin Buschbaum

Georg, b. 20 Nov. 1675 - sp.: Gorg, s/o Caspar Hottesen

Anna Margaretha, b. 16 Aug. 1682 - sp.: Anna Marg. - w/o Wendel Philips, citizen here. Anna Margaretha, d/o (--) Bernhard the Spielmann (street-player or fiddler) had an illeg. son Gustavus, bpt. 30 Sept. 1708 - sp.: her brother Gustavus. This is most interesting as Johannes Bernhardt of colonial N. Y. was nicknamed "Spielmann." (HJ)
