Born in Janesville, Rock County, Wisconsin in 1849, by 1860 Rachel was in Tazewell County, Illinois with her parents, William H. Ostrum (born in Canada) and Elizabeth Devore (born in Ohio). Rachel married Benjamin Wilson Reed in Tazewell County on March 30, 1865. For many years the couple lived in Nuckolls County, Nebraska but did return to Illinois where both are buried in Meadow Lawn Cemetery at Manito in Mason County.
