When the 1860 census was taken, the parents of yet-to-be-born John P. Funk lived in Pine Creek Township (P.O. Grand Detour) in Ogle County, Illinois. Likely John was born in Pine Creek Township in 1863.

Grand Detour is the community in which John Deere settled in the 1830s, having come west from Vermont. At his shop near his residence in Grand Detour, Deere developed "the famous plow."
