General Notes:
Portrait: Originally in an oval frame, this portrait of Isaac Allum, 1828-1907, hung in the "room" (parlor) of his son, Isaac Francis Allum, 1860-1929, and Isaac's wife, Ida (Smith) Allum, 1861-1942.
Nearby was always the portrait of his first wife, Lucinda (Parson) Allum, who died at just 30 years of age.
From the collection of Shirley Allum Hudlicky (Through the years, both portraits were ultimately given to Shirley as gifts from family members)
Shirley, November 2, 1964 letter to DeeAnna:
"The photo with the spots is of my great grandfather, Isaac Allum. It was copied from a large oval portrait that Grandma and Grandpa always had hanging in the parlor. The photo of Lucinda was a matching one. I used to go into the 'room'--Grandma always referred to the parlor as the 'room'--and stand and look at them when I was a kid."
1828 BIRTH of Isaac Allum
(Backed by the Democratic party, Andrew Jackson was elected 7th President late in 1828 to take office in 1829. Jackson defeated his rival, 6th President John Quincy Adams. In Washington, D. C., the will of James Smithson bequeathed funds for a national institution that became the Smithsonian. Cherokee Indians ceded Arkansas Territory lands to the U. S. government and agreed to migrate west of the Mississippi River. At Amherst, Massachusetts, after twenty years of preparation Noah Webster published his two-volume AMERICAN DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE with 38,000 entries.)

(Lucinda died during a somber period in our nation's history. Abraham Lincoln was President, and the North and South were at war. In Washington, D. C. the War Department was empowered to draft males 26 to 40 for the Union army. The first Negro regiment for the Union was organized at Boston, and the Confederate Congress permitted enslavement or execution of captured Negro Union soldiers. Robert E. Lee mauled "Joe" Hooker at Chancellorsville; Stonewall Jackson died of wounds. The Battle of Gettysburg occurred in Pennsylvania. Ulysses S. Grant won Vicksburg for the Union. Anti-draft riots took place in New York. Chickamauga...Chattanooga. Amidst the chaos, President Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November a national holiday of Thanksgiving. Lincoln delivered his famous Gettysburg Address in Pennsylvania on November 20. After Lucinda's death, her husband Isaac returned to Pennsylvania where he enlisted in the Civil War in 1864.)

In Ohio, an electric vacuum cleaner by the Hoover Suction-Sweeper Co. was offered to housewives. The sleek Pierce-Arrow auto was introduced.)

ALLUM, ISAAC--Section 24, P. O. Deep River. His ancestors came from England. His father was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania in June, 1796, farmed all his life, and died April 2, 1868. Isaac was born in Greene county, Pennsylvania, November 30, 1828. Was educated in his native county, and worked for his father until twenty-four years of age. After marrying he farmed for two years in Pennsylvania, then emigrated to Jasper county, Iowa, where he bought fifty acres, and farmed for seven years. Having lost his wife, at the expiration of this time, he returned to Pennsylvania and enlisted in the Fifth heavy artillery, but after three weeks service in a fort near Washington, was equipped as infantry and placed in company K, of the Two Hundred and Fourth Pennsylvania volunteers. He participated in numerous skirmishes against Gen. Mosby, and received his honorable discharge July 6, 1865. In March, 1870, he emigrated directly from his father's home to his present place. He married December 21, 1852, Miss Lucinda Parsons (sic), who was born in Greene county, Pennsylvania, May 6, 1832. This lady bore him the following children: Theodore V. His place is well stocked, and virtually free from debt.
OBITUARY (Isaac) from KEOKUK COUNTY NEWS, Keokuk, Keokuk County, Iowa, January 24, 1907:
Isaac Allum.
Isaac Allum, the subject of this sketch, was born in Green (sic) county, Penn., on the 30th day of November, 1828, and died January 14, 1907, aged 78 years, 1 month and 14 days. Little of his early manhood is known to the writer, but at the age of 24 he was united in marriage to Lucinda Parson and five children came to bless this union. Only one of these children, Isaac of Jamison, S. D. have survived their father, and Lucinda Allum died in April, 1863.
Mr. Allum was again united in marriage at the close of the year 1863 to Sarah A. Swart and seven of them are still living: Sarah J., Ida M., Minnie O., Emma E., Asenah A., Charley E. and Alma B. With the exception of the two last named these children are all married.
In September, 1864, Isaac Allum enlisted in Co. K., 5th Reg. Penn. Heavy Vol. Artillery under Capt. Kent and Col. Gallup, and served to the close of the war, being honorably discharged July 6, 1865.
After the war Mr. Allum came to Iowa and made his home on a farm near Deep River. His second wife died January 15, 1888, and Mr. Allum was married again August 2, 1894, to Susan Pollock, who with his eight children, remain to mourn the loss of a loving husband, indulgent father and, as many can testify, a kind friend.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Betz, of Keswick, in the White Oak United Presbyterian church, Jan. 16, 1907, and the mortal remains of Isaac Allum were deposited in the cemetery at that place to await the trumpet call and, we trust, the re-union under the Great Captain above.

July 31, 1964 letter to DeeAnna:
"Iowa cemeteries are consistently in the best condition. Even small out-of-the-way cemeteries are mowed and clipped. Old Dresden cemetery at Deep River is an example. To get to it, I traveled down a quarter-mile lane between corn fields. All at once, there is the cemetery, right in the middle of all this corn. It is fenced, mowed, clipped, and I can only wish for such care in cemeteries everywhere. White Oak cemetery at, or near, Thornburg, Iowa, where Isaac Allum is buried, is another well-kept country cemetery. It is behind a church and is well-fenced, with a gate, protected from livestock. It gave me a good feeling to see Isaac's inscription: 'Isaac Allum, Nov. 30, 1828 - Jan. 14, 1907; Sarah A., his wife, Mar. 29, 1842 - Jan. 15, 1888 - Gone but not forgotten.' "
