bullet  General Notes:

Document: After the death of her husband Richard Sargent in 1888, his second wife, Laura (Lindley) Sargent, applied for a widow's pension based upon her deceased husband's Civil War service. In this partial page from Sargent's pension file, second wife Laura states, "Claimant was never married before. Her husband was married before. His first wife [ ' that would be Pamelia ' ] ran off and was married to another man."
From DeeAnna Allum Granston

Shirley Allum Hudlicky:

"On her application for a widow's pension, Laura Lindley Sergeant stated that her husband was married before. ' His first wife ran off and was married to another man before her first husband was discharged from the war. '

"Laura's pension claim was rejected because Richard failed to get a divorce from his first wife. (Military pension number 472-840, Wash Co. marriage docket No. 1, p 75, #149.) Witness to widow's declaration for pension November 30, 1890: Cephas Lindley and J. S. Baldwin.

"Richard was taken to ' Govt. insane asylum Oct 25, 1862 and Oct 31, 1862 and was discharged March 10, 1863 at Wash. D. C. on grounds of insanity by order of Sec of War. '

1832 BIRTH of Pamelia Allum ("Amelia," "Milly" or "Millie," and "Peggy") (plus "Emily" in the 1870 census)

Pamelia may have been named for a younger sister of her mother.

(Andrew Jackson was 7th President in 1832 serving the first of two consecutive terms. In New England the Anti-Slavery Society was formed. South Carolina threatened to secede. Opposed to breaking up the Union, near the end of '32 Jackson wrote, "Can anyone of common sense believe the absurdity that a state has a right to secede and destroy this union and the liberty of our country with it, or nullify the laws of the union; then is our Constitution a rope of sand; under such I would not live." With advances in agriculture and industry slaves, in fact, increased in demand and value. In Michigan Territory, Chief Black Hawk was defeated at the Battle of Bad Axe. Artist George Catlin created sensational illustrations of Indian life along the Mississippi during a 2,000-mile voyage when he befriended Sioux and Mandan tribes. In New York City, more than 4,000 died of a cholera epidemic.)

She was also Pamelia-"Amelia's" mother-in-law. Where was Margaret's son - Pamelia's husband, Richard Sargent, in 1850?

Linda Kelley Schlater, August 11, 2006 e-mail:

"I think I found Richard as ' Richard Sergent ' (age 23, born PA) in the 1850 census. He is in Ohio County, Virginia, page 39, line 40, boarding with a Dunlop family. He is a laborer on a page with many other laborers. Perhaps he found work on construction? Ohio County, Virginia, is the same as Ohio County, West Virginia--it did not become West Virginia until the Civil War."
