bullet  General Notes:

Census: This excerpt from the 1800 census for Peters Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania clearly documents a Thomas Allum as a resident. In that census year Thomas was 16 to 26 years old, as was his unnamed wife. One male under age 10 was in the household.

Surnames on this census are alphabetized. This indicates the census had been re-written to alphabetize names. Unfortunately then, we are unable to see who Thomas's neighbors were, which might have provided a clue about a potential household-to-household blood relationship.

In 1800, a Thomas Allum
appears in Washington County, Pennsylvania in Peters Township. While it has not been definitively established that Thomas was a son of William Allum (ca 1754-1840), who lived in West Bethlehem Township, Thomas is the only other Allum for miles, and counties, around. He is the head of a household in 1800, and his age is defined as "16 to 26," putting him in an age range to have been William's son. As suddenly as Thomas appeared in Washington County in 1800, he disappeared by 1810. Did he migrate elsewhere? Or predecease William?

Thomas is not named in the will of William Allum. (See "Rebecca Allum" for speculation only.)

1800
CENSUS, Pennsylvania, Washington County, Peters Township

ALLUM, Thomas
1 male 16-26 (born 1774 - 1784)
1 female 16-26 (born 1774 - 1784)
1 male under 10 (born 1790 - 1800)

In 1830, a Thomas Allums
appears in Guernsey County, Ohio in Knox Township. The age range for Thomas in 1800 Pennsylvania does coincide with the age range for Thomas in 1830 Ohio. Once again, the 1830 Thomas has disappeared by 1840. To this time, no additional information has been discovered about Thomas Allums. (The Allum surname is sometimes found as "Allums" in records in Washington and Greene counties in Pennsylvania.)

1830
CENSUS, Ohio, Guernsey County, Knox Township

ALLUMS, Thomas
1 male 50 - 60 (born 1760 - 1780)
1 male 15 - 20 (born 1815 - 1810)
1 male 10 - 15 (born 1815 - 1820)
1 male 5 - 10 (born 1820 - 1825)
1 male under 5 (born 1825 - 1820)

1 female 40 - 50 (born 1780 - 1790)
1 female 10 - 15 (born 1815 - 1820)
1 female 5 - 10 (born 1820 - 1825)

If one, or both, of the census records above represent a son of William Allum, he would have been born in Maryland (presumably Harford County) before William migrated about 1783 to Washington County, Pennsylvania.

Thomas Allum in the 1800 census and Thomas Allums in the 1830 census had male children to perpetuate the surname.

Who were they?

What happened to them?

Shirley Allum Hudlicky:
"Not definite that a Thomas belongs in our family. He is not mentioned in William's will nor are any of his heirs."

DeeAnna Allum Granston:
It is important to note that within Ohio census records some "Allum" and "Allums" are documented as having been born in England.

In 1840, a Thomas G. Allen
is documented in Washington County in Hopewell Township with 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30 and 1 male under 5. The handwriting of his surname can be mistaken for "Allem." But in 1840, "our" Thomas Allum, 1818-1897, is documented in Richhill Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania with two people in his household: 1 male 20-30 and 1 female 20-30.

Thomas G.'s surname is transcribed in census indexes as Allen. Also, the book HISTORY OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA From Its First Settlement to the Present Time by Alfred Creigh, LL.D., 1870, page 267, documents Thomas G. Allen as a Justice of the Peace in Hopewell Township in 1845. He is also Thomas Allen in Hopewell Township in 1850.
