General Notes:
Photo: It is always gratifying to be able to gaze upon the face of an early ancestor. Here is a photo of Eliza (Allum) Fry, 1834-1914, who, except for a brief sojourn to Iowa in the 1850s, lived her entire life in Greene and Washington counties in Pennsylvania.

1834 BIRTH of Eliza Allum
(In Washington, D. C. in 1834, opponents of President Andrew Jackson declared themselves the Whig party. Henry Clay led a Senate vote to censure Jackson for withdrawing government funds from the Second Bank of the United States without Congressional approval. Clay stated, "The President, in the late executive proceedings in relation to the public revenue, has assumed upon himself authority and power not conferred by the Constitution and laws, but in derogation of both." Congress passed a law making "Indian Country" all territory west of the Mississippi River. The Department of Indian Affairs was established. Cyrus McCormick of Rockbridge County, Virginia patented a reaper to help farmers with harvest; the device would eliminate the need for large numbers of laborers thereby reducing the cost of food.)
