EPITAPH:
(Farewell) you(r) fr(e)nds as you put (me in) this grave to rest alo(ne) (T)ho iam dead to sorrow take But love my child(er)n for my sake
Shirley Allum Hudlicky:
"James was the first burial in the Allum Cemetery in 1850. I have slides of the James and Evaline Allum gravestones. On my first trip to Pennsylvania in 1965, both stones were erect, but by the time I returned, horses had knocked them down and they appeared to have rolled down the hill somewhat. The stones had a base and a tall top. I don't know if the base of the stones was set in the 'slab' at Enon Cemetery in 1981."

1812 BIRTH of James Allum
(In 1812 the United States was at war with Britain. Louisiana, a slave state, became the nation's 18th. Congress annexed Spanish West Florida declaring it part of the Mississippi Territory. German immigrants seeking religious freedom poured into Pennsylvania becoming known as the "church people" (Lutherans, Moravians) and the "plain people" (Amish, Mennonites). Collectively, they were called "Pennsylvania Dutch," the latter word a derivative of "Deutsch" that means "German.")

1831 MARRIAGE (approximate) of James Allum and Evaline Gregory
"Evaline" is the spelling used on pages 148 and 156 in the HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF ENON BAPTIST CHURCH, 1848-1990, by the Historical Committee
"Evaline" is also used in the Bible of Isaac and Louisa (Allum) Fry, according to descendant James Homer Fry (1919-2000)
Her gravestone reads "Eveline"

1840 CENSUS, Pennsylvania, Greene County, Richhill Township
7 people are in the household in 1840:
1 male 20-30 (James, born 1812) 1 male under 5 (son John Richard, born 1840) 1 female 30-40 (wife Evaline, born 1808) 2 females 10-15 (see statement below) 2 females 5-10 (see statement below)
In actuality, two of James' daughters would have been 5-10 years of age in 1840 (Sarah and Louisa), and two would have been under 5 (Malinda and Harriet "Matilda")
1850 DEATH of James Allum "February the 25th 1850 in the 38th year of his age" (inscription on gravestone)

(California became the 31st state in the nation. The 1850 census documented 23.2 million residents nationwide with New York the most populous state. States that did not appear in the 1840 census--but did appear in 1850--were Utah, Oregon, California and Texas. Mississippi and Missouri were the fastest-growing, and Wisconsin's population had increased tenfold. In 1850, Millard Fillmore became 13th President, succeeding Zachary Taylor, who died in office. A Federal grant obtained land for a railroad between Chicago and Mobile. In New Orleans, ornate cast iron became the style for balconies of courtyard houses in the French Quarter. "Swedish Nightingale" Jennie Lind made her debut at Castle Garden in New York City. THE SCARLETT LETTER by Nathaniel Hawthorne sold 4,000 copies in just 10 days.)
1850 CENSUS, Pennsylvania, Greene County, Richhill Township ("Eveline" Allum)
Shirley Allum Hudlicky, July 9, 1964 letter to DeeAnna:
"James had been dead only a short time when the census was taken. That poor woman left with all those kids! I wonder what he was doing with a threshing machine in February--maybe repairing it or moving it. Or harvest time is at a different time of the year in Pa.!"
1860 CENSUS, Pennsylvania, Greene County, Richhill Township ("Mrs. Evaline Allums")
1870 CENSUS, Iowa, Mahaska County, White Oak Township ("O. Allen," age 60, is in the household of her daughter, Malinda [Allum] McKanna and Malinda's husband William)
Transcribed "O. Allen," the female in the foregoing 1870 census was Evaline Gregory Allum. Because census years 1840 through 1860 found her in Richhill Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, her appearance in White Oak Township, Mahaska County, Iowa was a surprise, misspelled surname, incorrect initial, etc. The 1870 census was, in fact, the last in which Evaline was documented; she died in Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1873. It is possible she was in Iowa in 1870 specifically because her daughter Almira was being married there on August 10.
1873 DEATH of wife, Evaline (Gregory) Allum: "Died 14 July 1873 in the 65th year of her age" "Gone But Not Forgotten" (gravestone) (The nation's President was Ulysses S. Grant)
