"Old Rose Hill Cemetery is on Teller Road, north of highway 92, east of Oskaloosa. It is several miles northwest of the village of Rose Hill. I believe the entire area was once known as ' Rose Hill Community.' If it had a rural route mailing address, it would be RR 1, Rose Hill, Iowa.

"I did not find a stone for William H. McKanna at Old Rose Hill Cemetery. If he is there, he has no stone."

1840 CENSUS, Pennsylvania, Greene County, Richhill Township (it is presumed Malinda is in the home of her father, James Allum, the latter designated head of the household)

7 people are in the household in 1840:

1 male 20-30 (father James, born 1812)
1 male under 5 (son John Richard, born 1840)
1 female 30-40 (mother Evaline, born 1808)
2 females 10-15 (see statement below)
2 females 5-10 (see statement below)

In actuality, two of James' daughters would have been 5-10 years of age in 1840 (Sarah and Louisa), and two would have been under 5 (Malinda and Harriet "Matilda")

1860 MARRIAGE (approximate) of Malinda Allum and William H. McKanna, the latter widower of Malinda's elder sister Sarah Ann

1860 CENSUS, Pennsylvania, Greene County, Richhill Township (June 6) ("William H.," age 31, "Farmer") (wife "Matilda," age 23) (In addition to four children in the household, ages 2 to 8 --children of William McKanna and Malinda's elder sister Sarah Ann -- is "Parker Allums," age 17, Malinda's younger brother)

Shirley Allum Hudlicky, May 27, 1998 letter to DeeAnna:

"Several Allum and related families are on the same page of this census. It also shows that Wm. H. McKanna and "Matilda" [should be Malinda] were 'married within the year.' "

1870 CENSUS, Iowa, Mahaska County, White Oak Township, P. O. Oskaloosa (July 20) ("W." McKanna, age 42, "Farmer") (wife "M." McKanna, age 34) (In William and Malinda's household in 1870, in addition to their children, are Malinda's mother, Evaline [Gregory] Allum, and Malinda's younger sister, Almira Jane "Alice" Allum. Instead of "Allum," however, their surname is "Allen" in the census. Evaline is simply "A. Allen," age 60, and Almira Jane is "A. J. Allen," age 26. However, the census index at Ancestry.com uses "O. Allen" for Evaline.)

"Malinda, F, age 35y 9m 18d, d.o.b. 1840, d.o.d. March 2, 1875, buried Old Rose Hill Cemetery"



Comment:
According to Malinda's age detailed above, her date of birth would have been May 12, 1839 (not year 1840). Census records, however, indicate she was born between 1836 and 1838! In the 1850 census, she is documented as the third-born child of James and Evaline (Gregory) Allum, between elder sisters Sarah and Louisa...and younger sister Harriet. Because it is well documented that her sister Harriet "Matilda" Allum was born in 1838 and her brother John Allum was born in 1840, birth information in the cemetery record cited above is incorrect.
