bullet  General Notes:

Photo: This image of Almira Jane "Alice" Allum, 1844-1923, is a close-up from a family group photo on glass.

Alice's significant relationships -- if not all marriages -- are documented below.

(Vignette of Almira Jane "Alice" Allum created by DeeAnna Allum Granston from the family photograph on glass photographed by Shirley Allum Hudlicky in Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1965)

(In the mid-1960s the original family photo on glass belonged to Almira's grandson, Frederick "Fred" McKinley Allum, 1897-1983)

Shirley Allum Hudlicky
, October 14, 1965 letter to DeeAnna:

"Fred Allum let me take this photo on glass to the motel in Waynesburg where my equipment was to copy it. I lived in mental torture until I returned it to him intact."

BIRTH of Almira Jane Allum ("Alice")

1850
DEATH of father, James Allum (in February)

1850

1860
CENSUS, Pennsylvania, Greene County, Richhill Township (with widowed mother "Evaline Allums")

1860s MARRIAGE
prior to 1866 of Almira Jane "Alice" Allum and William David McClelland

William died on October 13, 1907 in Greene County, Pennsylvania, at age 73 years, and was buried in South Tenmile Cemetery on October 15. Cause of death, "dropsy." In some records, his surname is "McClellan"--without a "d" at the end.

Shirley Allum Hudlicky, 1998 note to DeeAnna:

"McClellan and McClelland are found as spellings for William's surname."

1866 BIRTH of Effin H. McClelland, son of Alice and William David McClelland

1860s RELATIONSHIP (?)

1868
BIRTH of Charles Harrison Allum, son of Alice, father undocumented

1869 DEATH of grandmother, Sarah (Raper) Allum

1870 CENSUS, Iowa, Mahaska County, White Oak Township ("A. J. Allen," age 26, is in the household of her elder sister, Malinda [Allum] McKanna and Malinda's husband William) (Also in the household in 1870 is Malinda and Almira's mother, Evaline Gregory Allum incorrectly documented "O. Allen" on the census page)

Unexpectedly found in Mahaska County, Iowa in the 1870 census, Almira Jane (as "A. J. Allen") was in the household of her elder married sister, Malinda Allum McKanna ("M. Mckanna"), Malinda's husband William ("W. Mckanna") and the McKanna children. In previous and subsequent census years Almira is affiliated with Greene County, Pennsylvania.

Also in the McKanna home in 1870 is "O. Allen," who was Evaline Gregory Allum, ca 1808-1873, mother of Almira and Malinda. Interestingly, the census was taken on August 4 and Almira (as "Elmira J. Allum") married Noah D. Clutter of Pennsylvania in Mahaska County, Iowa on August 10.

1870 MARRIAGE of Almira Jane Allum ("Elmira J. Allum") and Noah D. Clutter on August 10 in Mahaska County, Iowa by Rev. Thos. B. Kemp

1880

1896 DEATH of husband, John Jackson Cummins at approximately 69 years

1900

1907 DEATH of previous husband, William David McClelland

1910
CENSUS, Pennsylvania, Greene County, Richhill Township ("Alice J.," age 66, widow, is "mother" in the household of her son, Charles H. Allum) (In this census, Alice is shown as the mother of 2 children, 2 children living in the year 1910)

1920
CENSUS, Pennsylvania, Greene County, Richhill Township ("Alice," age 76, single, is in the household of her son, Charles H. Allum) ("Allums" on handwritten census page, but "Allume" in some census indexes)

Leslie Nelson
, September 10, 2004 e-mail to DeeAnna:

"There was more than one John Jackson Cummins in Greene County, but I believe the one who married Alice was the son of John and Nancy (Teagarden) Cummins for the following reasons:

"Howard Leckey (The Tenmile Country, pages 42-44) states that Agnes (Nancy) Teagarden, daughter of William and Bethia (Craig) Teagarden, born December 18, 1796, died December 21, 1880, married John Cummins, born June 21, 1795, died October 2, 1856. The census enumerations 1850 through 1880 confirm that Nancy was widowed by 1860, and the ages recorded for her throughout the years support the 1796 birthdate. J. J. was living with her until she died, and the 1880 census identifies Nancy as his mother. John and Nancy are buried at the Teagarden Cemetery near Ackleys in Greene County.

"Although J. J.'s obituary does not identify his parents, it names siblings who are known to be children of John and Nancy (Teagarden) Cummins.

"Here is J. J.'s undated obit, which I obtained from the Cornerstone Genealogical Society:

'J. J. Cummins died January 25 at his home near Burdette, this county, of heart and lung trouble. He was the youngest of a large family of children and is survived by a wife, one brother, Mr. Aaron Cummins of Burdette, and one sister, Mrs. Jane McDonald of West Finley. Mrs. Maria Houston, a sister, preceded him to the grave only a week. He was for many years a consistent member of the Christian church and lived all his life upon the farm where he was born. An upright citizen, a kind and obliging neighbor and friend, he was held in universal esteem by the people who knew him. The bereaved wife and brother and sister have the sympathy of neighbors and friends. The remains were laid to rest at the Chapel burial ground near Burnsville; services by Elder Lariman.'

"Greene County probate records confirm that J. J. died January 25, 1896.

"Alice did not marry after J. J.'s death. In the 1920 census she is Alice Cummins, widow, and her will is signed 'Alice Cummins.'

"J. J. and Alice are buried together in West Finley Cemetery."
